Although dogs have nothing much to say they have always understood the fundamental meaning of "the way to live." If human beings have figured out "the way to live" nobody seems to have been able to clearly convey the idea. And the dogs are not speaking.

Dogs don't have organizations or institutions to pass along their history. They only have owners. Despite the authority of the owners over the dog, the dog's only real authority is the way it lives. And the way a dog lives is "to be."

The character of a dog is patience, forbearance and fortitude. A dog has profound, common sense; although I have seen them do, what most humans would call stupid things. I give them high marks (and a dog biscuit) for not having codes, injunctions, and graven images.

They are not elite or obscure and are "up front" with their feelings. Of course, you know where a dog stands and when that is directly in front of you it can be intimidating.

What is interesting about painting dogs as opposed to humans is that they wear no mask. Dogs don't laugh at your stupid jokes or scold you for your poor behavior. Dogs "are" or "is" or maybe it's "be." Now, what does that mean?

I don't have the slightest idea. But I know by observing dogs closely, painting them and reading what others have written about them I get a sense of this unknown quality. and it's a quality I admire.
